Burney Construction Inc. is a Fleming Island,based commercial construction firm built on the belief that a project's success is measured long after the last inspection is signed. We're not a vendor. We're a partner, one that shows up, stays late when the schedule calls for it, and answers the phone years after the ribbon is cut.
Our Story
Northeast Florida roots, nearly three decades deep.
Burney Construction Inc. was founded in Clay County to serve a market that was growing faster than its contractors could keep up with. What began as a small commercial builder taking on retail renovations and neighborhood offices has grown into a full-service general contractor delivering design-build and construction management engagements across Northeast Florida.
As the region grew, so did the scope of our work. Distribution centers rose along the I-295 corridor. Medical office buildings replaced strip retail up and down US-17. Nocatee turned pasture into planned community. Burney grew alongside it, never in a hurry, never chasing the next market. Every step in our capabilities came from a client asking us to do more, and us making sure we could do it right before we said yes.
Along the way, we made a deliberate choice: stay mid-sized. Big enough to bond a multi-million-dollar hospital expansion. Small enough that the principal who shook your hand at the kickoff meeting is still the one walking your project at substantial completion. That decision has cost us some contracts we could have chased. It has also built us a client list that keeps coming back.
Working in Florida is a specialty of its own. Wind-load calculations that make sense in Illinois don't work here. Coastal soils demand real geotech. Every county from Clay to St. Johns to Duval has its own permitting rhythm, its own inspectors, its own quirks. Our teams have spent careers learning those rhythms, and we've built a bench of local subcontractors and suppliers who share our standards. That local knowledge is why owners in Fleming Island, Orange Park, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine keep calling. We know how to build here.
A Burney project starts before the drawings are done. Our pre-construction team engages early, pricing conceptual designs against real market conditions, flagging constructability issues while they're still line items on a schematic, and building a schedule that owners and architects can actually plan around. By the time we break ground, the budget isn't a hope; it's a commitment.
We run open-book cost accounting on every project. Owners see the subcontractor bids, the buyout logs, the change order justifications. When something moves, we explain why, in writing, before the field is asked to build it. No games with allowances. No hidden contingencies. Just a straight ledger from start to close-out.
Every job gets one point of contact, a project executive who owns the relationship from the first meeting through the final warranty walk. Our superintendents are on site daily, not managing three jobs from a truck. That daily presence is the reason our schedules hold, our safety numbers stay clean, and our subcontractors show up for us when they could be somewhere else.
The result is a repeat-client business. Most of the work we do is for owners we've built for before, or for people they've referred. We don't win by being the lowest bidder. We win because we finish what we start, price it honestly, and make the owner's life easier along the way.
